MEET THE ARTISTS

TELIKÁ is the fruit of the persevering work done by two passionate artists coming from two different backgrounds and surfaces: dance & ice skating.

A new art form is born from two professionals eager to experience the unknown, and to test & push the boundaries.

Florentine Houdinière and Julien Marie-Anne co-choreographed the TELIKÁ performance.

FLORENTINE HOUDINIÈRE

She performed main roles in productions such as Broadway on Ice by Bietak Productions, Holiday on Ice, and became a member of Ice Theatre of New York in 2001. Simultaneously she choreographed for many high level international competitors and for skaters from the French Team, and since 2006 she has participated in many TV shows in Europe.

She is the artistic director of La Compagnie by Florentine Houdinière, seeking to investigate deeper into choreographic research on ice and to create innovative collaborations with artists coming from diverse artistic backgrounds. TELIKÀ is a project which she’s been dreaming about since 2005 and she’s thrilled to now materialize the concept with Julien Marie-Anne.

JULIEN MARIE-ANNE

DANCER – CHOREOGRAPHER

Born in Martinique, Julien started dancing at a young age. When he was 15, he won a dance contest which landed him a training at the famous Alvin Ailey school in New York where he perfected his art. A year later, Julien left his home on the island to pursue his dancing carreer. In 2004 he entered Le Centre de formation supérieure «Epsedanse» directed by Anne-Marie Porras in Montpellier, France. His training includes jazz, contemporary dance and ballet (as a student of Rudy Bryans, first dancer for the Roland Petit ballet). During these years he performed in many ballets such as : «Fils Du Vent» by Anne-Marie Porras, « Boléro » by Thierry Malandain, and Béjart’s « Boléro » which he danced with the Paris Opéra during the Montpellier Dance Festival.

As a certified ballet teacher, Julien has worked with many choreographers such as Natacha Crouzet, Nathalie Moyen (world premiere Luxemburg project with the «KrausFrink Percussion» band ), Katia Benbelkacem, and the « Vulpès » company. He danced solo with the « Choeur de la Maîtrise de Paris » directed by Patrick Marco. He balances his ballet teaching at the Conservatoire de Puteaux, with dance performances.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The story behind the story

The TELIKÁ adventure started in 2005 as I was preparing a memoire as part of my post graduate studies. My professor didn’t seem very happy with my topic choice; here I was in a sports activities and management program, but I wanted to create and produce an amazing artistic duet on ice that would be completely unexpected and full of meaning. At the time, I felt so convinced and inspired by my topic that my teacher finally gave in and accepted my plan. After some initial writing, the concept: was on its way.

Once I obtained my diploma, I continued my activities as a performer and choreographer, traveling around the globe for ice shows and many TV shows in various countries.

I settled back in Paris in 2010. By that time, the concept had evolved; I was passionate about dance and the blending of dance and ice skating became crystal clear. The dance-skating duet was on its way. I kept writing about the project while pursuing my other activities.

In 2015, I met choreographer Johan Nus to whom I talked about the project and he casually said to me: "if you want to, I can help you jumpstart the project." I took him at his word and the project began to take shape. The real adventure began !

We had our first trainings off and on the ice : we built a shoe prototype which worked half way as Johan was slipping on the ice, but we kept on training anyway.

After some time working together, Johan needed to go to travel for his work. After much research to find the ideal dancer, I was beginning to feel weary. Eventually I was referred to a dancer named Julien to whom I sent an email. After no response for a few days I threw my arms up in the air and I said "I am exhausted by this search and if you want me to pursue this project, you take over." The next morning, I got an email from Julien, we meet the next day and started rehearsals two days later !

We has long rehearsals on and off ice; the cold, the early mornings, the many shoe prototypes, Julien’s fingers bloodied by my blades – a real professional hazard. We finally found our dream shoes thanks to Katia Benbelkacem our co-choreographer who had spotted some contenders. There we were in a small Parisian shop and we found our beauties: an old old old model on sale for… 15€.

Julien could run on the ice faster than I could skate. The shoes were now sticking to the ice; we were all set !
